High Tibial Osteotomy
This procedure removes a wedge of bone from the tibia, straightening the leg and correcting the deformity known as bow-leggedness.
The fibula may be temporarily moved aside to expose the side of the tibia.
Wedge of Bone Removed
A wedge of bone is removed from the tibia. A portion of the fibula also may be removed.
A metal plate is attached to the bone above the open gap.
The gap is then closed, straightening the tibia.
End of Procedure
A screw is inserted into the bottom portion of the metal plate to anchor the tibia, and the fibula is reattached. The metal plate will act as a bridge as the tibia heals.
